About Me

Providing children nationwide with access to a proper education is very important. Providing this excellent education would not be possible without teachers, administrators, and other educators willing to dedicate their lives and careers to providing students with the resources and education they need to thrive. One individual who has continued to offer this excellent education is Jerry Gibson, who has had a long and successful career as an educator and administrator in Texas.

Early Life and Education

From a young age, Dr. Jerry decided he wanted to pursue a career in education. Growing up in Texas, he always saw the impact that his teachers could have on the lives of his classmates and the overall community. After finishing high school, Gibson attended East Texas Baptist University, which he graduated from in 1993. He returned to school and received a Master’s in Education from Lamar University in 2002.

Eventually, as his career grew and developed, he went to the University of Houston and obtained his doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2015. This has provided him with the education and skills necessary to be successful in his current leadership role. He was also able to meet a lot of other aspiring educators, which have helped him form valuable professional and personal relationships with others in the education field across the state of Texas and the rest of the country.

Early Career as a Teacher and Coach

When he first finished his education degree, Jerry was determined to land a role as a teacher and coach at a top district in Texas. He eventually landed a position that allowed him to combine his passion for academics and athletics. Throughout his early career, Dr. Gibson took on various roles, including teacher, head coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and full-time principal. Eventually, he decided to dedicate his career to school administration as this would allow him to enact the most change in his community and the local education system.

One of the most significant roles he took on in his career was in 2011 when Jerry Gibson was named the Executive Director of Secondary Education in the Waco Independent School District. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the operations of nearly a dozen schools with more than 6,500 students, one of the larger districts in Texas.

Move to Superintendent Role

Following his time working in accelerating roles ranging from a teacher to a principal, Dr. Gibson was offered an opportunity to work as the superintendent for a school district in Texas. Over the next ten years, he oversaw three different school districts. In each role, he took on unique challenges that ranged from incorporating new educational plans to managing relationships with parents and educators in the district. At all stops along the way over the decade, he continued to focus on what matters most and ensuring that all students in the area had access to the education and resources they needed to thrive. Some of the districts he was the superintendent for included the Coldspring, Oakhurst, and Marshall, TX, school districts.

The leadership of Galveston ISD

Following the decade as a superintendent, the Galveston Independent School District in Galveston, TX, was lucky to hire Dr. Gibson as their next superintendent. As the leader of this unique school district and system, Dr. Gibson always looks for what is best for the student and what will help them be successful upon graduation. He has instituted a solid and focused educational plan that helps ensure a student graduates are prepared for college or to enter the workforce.

Variety of Honors and Achievements

This includes being named the ESC 7 Superintendent of the Year in 2020, being a finalist for the Varsity Brands Superintendent of the Year, and being named a member of the local chamber of commerce in various communities where he has taught and led. He also has a strong track record of improving academic results in the schools where he serves, including helping the Marshall ISD go from a nearly failing overall grade to having a total B average in just three years.

Interests Outside of Work

While running the Galveston ISD continues to take a lot of time, Dr. Jerry Gibson has many interests and hobbies outside of the district. One of his favorite ways to spend time is with his wife and family. He continues living on Galveston Island and always looks forward to seeing his three adult, grown children, and six grandchildren. He also has a passion for giving back to the community. He supports a variety of regional and national charities and always looks for good causes that can help people in the Galveston and Houston, TX, areas.
